1947 Hallicrafters S-40A Receiver in Beautiful Condition
Up for my no reserve auction is a beautiful classic Hallicrafters S-40A (rare in this condition) totally restored Ham Short Wave Communications Receiver! This equipment is in extremely good condition and Clean…Serial number 90097 (definitely collector quality). It has recently been refurbished with all wax capacitors replaced (16 total) using higher voltage ratings than the originals. All electrolytic filter capacitors (4 total) were also replaced using higher voltage ratings than the originals. All resistors were checked for tolerance and replaced (2 total) for any deviation over 10%. The wiring was checked and replaced as needed, especially in the high temperature areas. All tube terminal voltages were checked & verified. This radio is all original including the Hallicrafters factory labeling which was left intact. The tubular electrolytic was removed, and a steel cover for the area was fabricated. New capacitors were placed under the chassis. Purists would insert the new capacitors in the casing, but I prefer this method for future servicing, if ever needed! From observation this particular radio’s chassis had never been serviced-please note the original Hallicrafters factory seal on the bottom of the cabinet old but untouched!
The cabinet was thoroughly cleaned with all oxidation (not rust) and dirt removed, and a special resin & polish was applied (my own formula) which restored the original factory finish luster & will preserve the museum quality condition for this radio's next sixty one years! The chassis is in nice condition and clean, no steel wool used here-this is all original. The resin & polish was also applied on the chassis to inhibit rust. The radio’s silk screen lettering is perfect and crisp! The original line cord has been replaced (color coordinated), all tubes (9 total) were replaced NOS (new old stock) and rated at 100%. The radio has been realigned to Hallicrafters factory specifications. Fresh dial lights were installed to replace the originals, and the 5” built-in speaker is in original unmolested condition (no tears). Both the tuning and band spread controls were restrung per factory. I personally think this radio looks like new-no obvious defects on this 61 year old radio, which I believe rivals any museum piece! You will be the ultimate judge-it is getting very hard to find clean S-40 series restorable radios for this period of vintage electronic equipment. There are over 60 logged man hours in this complete and total restoration!
This is a fun radio for the ham shack, office, kitchen, living room/den or someone's radio collection (with its built-in speaker and smaller size) will fit nicely on a desk or bookshelf. I always have more fun listening to my restored radios especially the AM broadcast band (no FM) is superb, even with a short antenna. Short wave is fully functional for this period radio, and performance can be enhanced with a longer exterior antenna. Please remember that this radio is restored to 1947 manufacturer standards (albeit with modern part replacements), not 2008 standards, and bid with this in mind. I personally prefer a tube radio for its sound quality and these particular radios for the classic industrial era design (a true radio history collectible) and hope you do too!
Final thoughts: I am including photocopies of the original manual & service bulletins for the S-40 series. I will list the specs on this radio for anyone interested in this Hallicrafters classic. Radio will be sent working and not DOA!! This radio is being sold "as-is" because of it's age-however you will not be disappointed in this restored beauty! Buyer will pay shipping and insurance on a box within a box packing, and settlement must be made within 72 hours of auction end.... Thx and Good Bidding, always with confidence!
Many of my radios end up in high end living rooms, family rooms, offices and of course ham shacks. Interior decorators love these art deco & industrial era radios that are genuinely pretty to look at restored. Appreciation and demand is increasing on total restorations, my definition of total restoration includes the cabinet (chassis up). This radio would look beautiful in a desk setting, the back side is as pretty as the front, and would make a great conversation piece at the office or gift for a aspiring ham! Christmas is just around the corner!

The S-40 was the modern version of the pre-war S-20 and underwent three versions. The first version featured white dials rather than the later green ones. The later S-40A and B versions involved cosmetic changes (the S-40B has a black speaker grille) and the use of miniature IF coils.
The S-40A could have the external S-meter Hallicrafters SM-40 fitted or the new Hallicrafters SP-44 Panoramic Adaptor via the external socket. The set features ANL (automatic noise limiter) and AVC (automatic volume control), BFO (beat frequency oscillator), sensitivity and tone controls and flywheel tuning. These are solid radios that perform well and were the next step up from the very popular S-38 series. The S-40 series radios have become popular with collectors! |
